Economic concepts and technologies for sharing industrial data in data ecosystems

In order to maintain and expand their competitive advantage, industrial companies must continuously adapt their business model to changing market requirements, legal frameworks and advances in technological innovation. Data is playing an increasingly important role as a (strategic) resource in this process. Every day, 2.5 million terabytes of data are generated worldwide, of which approximately 1.5 million terabytes are generated in industry. This data is an important source for increasing operational efficiency, for innovative digital services and for closer customer interaction. However, companies will not be able to take advantage of these opportunities if the data remains in isolated silos. Rather, data unfolds its value when it is used, not only within the company, but also beyond, in the customer-supplier relationship or in business ecosystems.

The challenge

Regulatory requirements such as the EU Data Act or the European Supply Chain Directive (CS3D), but also large-scale projects such as Catena-X or Factory-X, are impacting the current business model of the manufacturing industry. This raises questions about how to handle data. So far, the focus in both science and practice has been primarily on the technical aspects of sharing industrial data. However, there was little knowledge about economic aspects and the organizational framework for industrial data sharing in the sense of data governance.

Our service

In May 2023, business requirements for data sharing were formulated in an initial workshop with representatives of Robert Bosch GmbH and Fraunhofer ISST. They formed the basis for successful collaboration in 2023 and 2024. Based on various use cases, the project scientifically examined and validated economic issues, framework concepts, and rules for handling data.

The result

The service modules defined in the project will enable Robert Bosch GmbH to use data as a (strategic) resource in the long term, both internally and in ecosystems such as Catena-X, thereby maintaining and building competitive advantage. This also enables the company to meet increasing regulatory requirements such as the EU Data Act or CS3D.
