Sustainability-Focused Orchestration in the Edge Cloud Continuum

In the project “IPCEI-CIS Sustainability-Focused Orchestration in the Edge Cloud Continuum,” T-Systems International GmbH and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft are collaborating to integrate energy efficiency into the entire technology environment of the Edge Cloud Continuum. The goal is to prioritize energy-efficient practices from infrastructure to application development and Edge IoT setups to promote a sustainable and environmentally friendly technology landscape.

The challenge

Integrating energy efficiency into the orchestration and management of complex Edge Cloud IT landscapes is challenging because it requires adapting and optimizing each layer of the technology stack. The lack of unified power management strategies and the need for innovative solutions that combine functionality and energy savings are key challenges that will be addressed in this collaboration.

Our contribution

As part of the collaboration, we are developing innovative solutions that integrate energy efficiency as a core component in the orchestration and management of the Edge Cloud Ecosystem. This includes the development of benchmarking and metrics systems, energy-efficient algorithms, green coding practices, and containerization and microservices strategies. Hardware-software co-design and edge AI implementation help us create energy-efficient applications, while smart energy techniques optimize energy resource management.

The result

The techniques developed in the project lead to an end-to-end implementation of sustainable technologies within the Edge Cloud ecosystem. Real-time optimization of energy savings and the reduction of local computing and data transfers not only increases system efficiency, but also reduces environmental impact. This sets a new benchmark for future technological advances in the context of energy efficiency.
