The challenge
The implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in data ecosystems is accompanied by numerous challenges. In addition to the large volumes of data required to train and validate AI applications, the data and analysis results handled are sensitive and require a high level of trust between the stakeholders involved. In the mobility context, numerous stakeholders are also involved along the entire life cycle of an application, ranging from the production of necessary sensors, the collaborative development of functionalities, validation and testing, through to operation and the monitoring of safety aspects. Due to the complex interlinking of different service providers, AI applications face major trust and sovereignty hurdles. This trust is addressed by the newly emerging Gaia-X data infrastructure initiative. This is where the Gaia-X 4 AI project comes in by developing methods, concepts and services based on Gaia-X in the areas of automotive production and automated and connected driving.
Our contribution
As part of Gaia-X 4 AI, we ensure the exchange and compatibility between Gaia-X 4 AI and the Gaia-X initiative and related open source communities. We are also developing a framework and interfaces to enable sovereign data space components and various services. Trust and data sovereignty are our top priorities. The basis is formed by the Eclipse Dataspace Components (EDC) and specifications of the International Data Spaces Association (IDSA), which are being tested for use in the automotive and mobility sector.
Results
Gaia-X 4 AI links Gaia-X, i.e. open, sovereign data infrastructures and European development strands, with the context of automotive applications, cloud systems and the handling of data and services for the operation of AI applications. Gaia-X 4 AI is creating a Gaia-X-compatible digital data and service ecosystem in the automotive and mobility sector, which will serve as a starting point for further research and applications in the Gaia-X 4 Future Mobility field. As part of the cross-project Base-X project, data space services and standards are being contributed to enable open and flexible data ecosystems.
